"Applause" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, from her upcoming third studio album, Artpop (2013). Written and produced by Lady Gaga and DJ White Shadow, the song was released on August 12, 2013 by Interscope Records as the album's lead single. Originally intended for a release through mainstream and rhythmic airplay on August 19, 2013, it was rush-released a week earlier after two snippets of the song were leaked online on August 10. Details of the song were revealed throughout 2013 as Gaga tweeted its lyrics in early 2013. Written while touring for her Born This Way Ball, "Applause" almost missed inclusion on Artpop, let alone serving as a single.

"Wrecking Ball" is a song recorded by American recording artist Miley Cyrus for her fourth studio album, Bangerz (2013). It was released on August 25, 2013 by RCA Records as the second single from the album. The song was produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut, and written by MoZella, Stephan Moccio, Sacha Skarbek, Dr. Luke and Cirkut. Both the song and its music video received mixed reviews from critics. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first number one hit in the country.

"The Fox", released as "What Does the Fox Say?" in some countries, is an electronic dance music song and viral video by Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis. The video was posted on YouTube on 3 September 2013, and has over 100 million views as of October 8. It has been compared to K-pop hit "Gangnam Style".Currently, "The Fox" is no. 6 in the Billboard Hot 100, the highest ranked song by a Norwegian artist on Billboard since A-ha's number 1 hit "Take on Me in 1985.

"Pour It Up" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna from her seventh studio album Unapologetic (2012). It was serviced to urban radio stations in the United States on January 8, 2013, as the second US single, and third overall single from the album. It was later also sent to contemporary hit radio radios in the country. "Pour It Up" was co-written and produced by Michael Williams and co-produced by J-Bo. It is a club song with a minimal hip hop beat. Lyrically, Rihanna brags about her wealth on the song, which serves as both a strip club anthem and a declaration of independence.

It was released on June 3, 2013 by RCA Records as the lead single from the album, following Cyrus' departure from Hollywood Records in early 2013. "We Can't Stop" was written by Mike L. Williams II, Pierre Ramon Slaughter, Timothy Thomas and Theron Thomas (known collectively as Rock City), Cyrus, Douglas Davis and Ricky Walters. The song was produced by Williams II under his production name, Mike Will Made-It, with co-production from P-Nasty and vocal production by Rock City. "We Can't Stop" is a pop, R&B, and dance song that lyrically talks of a house party.

Upon its release, "Burn" was met with a mixed response from music critics, who praised it as "catchy" and noted it as one of Goulding's most radio-friendly songs to date, while others felt it was not memorable. It earned Goulding her first number-one single on the UK Singles Chart, selling 116,857 copies in its first week and staying atop the chart for three consecutive weeks. The track attained similar success internationally, reaching the top ten in countries such as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Sweden.

"Fix You" is a song by Coldplay and is the fourth track on their 2005 album, X&Y. During live performances of the song all four members of the band sing, although on record only Chris and Will do. It was also released as the second single from that album in various countries. In a track-by-track interview with Metal Hammer, frontman Oli Sykes announced his intention to make this song the second single and described it as "one of their best written songs". In its first week the song reached № 4 on the UK Rock Singles Chart, rising to № 3 the next. On 28 February it was BBC Radio's "Hottest Record in the World". A 10" vinyl of the track was released for Record Store Day (April 20th 2013).
